Is it legal/discriminatory to advertise properties for sale as over 55's only?

In Australia these properties are seen advertised a lot. I was wondering what legal basis there is for doing so.Is it legal/discriminatory to advertise properties for sale as over 55's only?
It is perfectly legal and not discriminating in any way. There are lots of apartments and developments that are 55+ only.

Age is not a protected class. ';It is illegal to Discriminate Against Any Person Because of Race, Color, Religion, Sex,

Handicap, Familial Status, or National Origin'; quoted directly from Federal Fair Housing Act.

They do that because a lot of seniors do not want to live around a bunch of kids.

EDIT: Dawn you are the one that needs to get a grip!! She did not say that she was envious or anything remotely negative about that type of community. She was just asking a question, that you failed to answer may I point out. You must have a pretty sad life to jump to negative conclusions about people you do not even know!Is it legal/discriminatory to advertise properties for sale as over 55's only?
Nothing illegal about this type of property in the least. What in the world would make you think so? These are highly looked for properties anywhere. And I would have to ask, why do you care? If someone wants to be in a 55 or older community what does that have to do with anything in your life unless you are 55 or older? How is that discriminatory? I strongly believe in these communities and the social aspects they offer to the age group they fit. And by the way, age is always a factor as to where one wants to live. No one in their right mind would buy or rent in a neighborhood that was dedicated more to college age students if they weren't of that age. People who are married and have children want a community with lots of families and children. What the hell is the difference? Get a grip and stop looking for liberal tags on everything in life. We all have a right to live where it is most convenient and more to our lifestyle and age group. Sorry if you are envious of those choices.
Developers can get special funding and/or property tax terms for housing that is designated solely for seniors and the disabled. It is perfectly legal, a special government program to provide suitable %26amp; economical housing for retirees and the disabled.
It is legal

Older people don't want to live near people who have small children or 20 somethings who have parties constantly or loud music. They are at a different time in life where they DESERVE to have some peace and quiet!
